Ban for illegal pet sales

A  woman has been banned from keeping a pet shop for two years after admitting to selling animals from her home.
Jadwiga Ewa Grum, 37, of Johnson Road, Erdington, pleaded guilty to one offence under the Pet Animals Act 1951, keeping the premises as a pet shop without a licence. She received a 12-month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay £500 towards costs plus a £15 victim surcharge.
Birmingham City Council brought the case against Grum after its animal welfare team received a complaint from colleagues at Surrey Trading Standards.
On 17 September 2015, Surrey Trading Standards contacted the animal welfare about a couple who bought a German shepherd puppy from Grum, who advertised on the Pets4Home website. The puppy was seized and quarantined after it was found to be imported at too young an age: puppies must be 15 weeks old before they can be brought into the UK.
Officers visited Grum’s home on 25th September 2015 and asked to see all the puppies and associated paperwork, including pedigree certificates and pet passports. Four were in the garden and another four were in a van belonging to Grum’s partner.
It was evident the puppies found on the Johnson Road premises had been imported from Poland, but Grum maintained that she was not selling the puppies over the internet.
Less than a week later, officers discovered Grum’s advert was still on the Pets4Homes website with the same contact details, so arrangements were made to view the puppies on 1st October 2015.
Posing as customers, two officers visited Grum’s home in Johnson Road to see the puppies.  When they asked to see the pedigree certificates, these could not be produced.
On 3rd November 2015, Grum was interviewed under caution, but continued to deny any trading activity.

A taxi driver has been given a suspended prison sentence after he was found guilty of a sexual offence by Birmingham Magistrates.
The court heard that Jamshed Miah, aged 57, of Castle Vale, intentionally touched a woman sexually without her consent. The victim was a vulnerable person, and he, as a taxi driver, was in a position of trust, magistrates told him. The offence was made more serious because it was committed in the presence of an autistic child.
Miah was sentenced this week to eight weeks in prison, suspended for twelve months. He was ordered to undertake 100 hours of unpaid community work, and to register with the police for seven years. He was told to pay £480 in costs and surcharge. The offence took place in September 2015, in Sutton Coldfield.

The CCTV cameras in Castle Vale work throughout the day and night, every day of the year, according to CCTV boss Marian Payne.
She has responded on this website to comments from the public about two muggings in recent weeks, in which women have been robbed of their handbags.
Neither incident was picked up by CCTV.
” However, we have an extremely high rate of detection and prosecution of various offences/incidents due to the work of professional and skilled operators of the CCTV,” says Marian.
“There is no charge to the residents for the CCTV service; it acts as both a deterrent and security source and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.”

Some CCTV cameras in Castle Vale could be moved to make sure that they cover potential crime hotspots.

All cctv cameras in Castle Vale are monitored by trained staff throughout the day and night, every day of the year

All cctv cameras in Castle Vale are monitored by trained staff throughout the day and night, every day of the year

An increase in some crimes over the past 3-6 months has caused the police to apply for a Public Space Protection Order for the estate. This will need to be supported by the council, and will enable various measures to be taken to prevent and cut down on crime. It could include giving PCSOs (police community support officers) dispersal orders, allowing them to curb large gatherings of youths in public areas.

Residents have raised concerns about large gatherings of youths in some parts of the estate over the summer months. There has also been an increase in illegal motorbike and mini-moped use.
Local police have also been dealing with two reported recent muggings, and there have been other mugging scares reported on social media locally.
CVCH (housing association) bosses say they are currently reviewing the positions of some of their 79 cameras and may re-locate some of the equipment to keep a closer eye on some key areas.
Some of the cameras are static, others are mobile, with zoom lenses. Camera operators are able to zoom in to view individual faces more clearly if there is good cause.

Castle Vale has 79 cameras monitoring the estate

The housing association has confirmed today that all cameras are currently working, and that they are manned by fully trained staff throughout the day and night, every day of the year.  CCTV operators have enhanced SIA licences (Security Industry Authority).

CVCH, the housing association in charge of the camera system, has been accredited with a BSS (British Standard Safety) certificate.
All cameras are monitored at all times, and staff undertake an  hourly focus on particular areas of the estate.
Residents can request to have a particular area monitored more closely. They can also report incidents or problems directly to the cctv team on 0121 776 8880.
Local police have a direct line to the cctv control centre, and have confirmed that cctv footage on the estate has led to prosecutions. One woman whose photograph featured in CVCH pages of Tyburn Mail last month has now been given a four-month prison sentence after cameras spotted her in Castle Vale, following an injunction that prevented her from legally entering the estate.
In another case, an illegal motorbike rider has recently been traced to his home address using cctv footage. He has been successfully prosecuted.

James Lee: jailed for ten years after fight in Erdington pub

James Lee, aged 57, from Stechford, lashed out with the blade at Erdington High Street pub The Cross Keys on 3rd June. He severed his 41-year-old victim’s carotid artery causing “catastrophic” blood loss. The victim’s white tee-shirt turned red within seconds, according to witnesses.
Doctors said that the victim would have bled to death had he not received swift medical attention by paramedics and customers who provided first aid.
Lee was knocked unconscious during the fight that broke out just before 10pm. Police officers found the pair lying just feet apart covered in blood.
The 57-year-old refused to answer questions in police interview but was charged with attempted murder.
Prosecutors later accepted a guilty plea of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday (Aug 5) he was jailed for 10 years and handed an extended licence period of four years.
Detective Constable Michael Lynch described the attack as drink-fuelled and totally unprovoked.
He said: “Lee’s friend took a clear disliking to the victim: CCTV showed him staring intently at him before walking over and punching him in the side.
“He reacted and punched the man – who was visibly drunk and swaying on his feet – to the floor before Lee followed him away from the bar and pulled the knife from a trouser pocket.”
